From clean energy to clean water, advanced materials provide the building blocks of innovation in a vast range of sectors and applications. As a materials chemist, you may design and develop intelligent products for areas such as health, energy, mobility, and communication, as well as environment and climate management.

Our MSc Advanced Materials is suited to talented chemists, materials scientists and engineers with a passion for creating and analysing innovative materials. It offers the chance to get to grips with materials chemistry including the design, analysis, and characterisation of materials. With a multi-disciplinary approach, we offer a unique combination of chemistry and project management to develop your professional skills and prepare you to join the next generation of materials scientists.

With a core interest in materials chemistry, on this course you’ll gain an in-depth understanding of the relationship between the structure and performance of different materials, the fundamental principles driving the development of innovative products, and strategies for the design and development of novel materials.

You’ll also develop in-demand management skills with two project management units, where you’ll learn the principles behind delivering successful projects in industry. These units have been developed in line with the Association for Project Management (APM) and Project Management Institute (PMI) Body of Knowledge.

**Features and Benefits**
- **Cutting-edge facilities** – Learn the latest analytical and materials characterisation techniques in our advanced materials lab. You’ll have access to specialist equipment to explore methods such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-rays photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy.

- **Learn alongside world-leading researchers** – We’re 6th in UK for the impact of our research in Engineering and 100% of research impact is world-leading or internationally excellent (REF 2021).

- **Professional impact** – With a mix of practical skills, research-led understanding and industry-standard project management techniques, this course offers the professional tools you’ll need to build a successful career in the field.

- **Optional placement year** – Boost your career prospects and put theory into practice with an industry placement year.

- **A UK leader in hydrogen technology** – The Manchester Fuel Cell Innovation Centre is the epicentre of hydrogen technology in the UK, supporting Greater Manchester’s target of becoming carbon neutral by 2038. We also work closely with PrintCity, the University’s 3D additive and digital manufacturing centre.

- **Professional study environment** – We’ve invested over £115 million to transform the way we teach and the way our students learn. The new Dalton building is equipped with dynamic learning spaces, world-class teaching and research facilities and collaborative study zones. This means you’ll graduate with the skills and experiences employers look for.
