With our BSc (Hons) Chemistry degree, we blend hands-on laboratory study with classroom learning to ensure you graduate with a balanced understanding of the subject, from inorganic and organic chemistry, to physical and analytical chemistry.

We’ve worked to shape our curriculum around industry needs and developments, so we’ll equip you with the skills and strengths that employers want. While the units you’ll study provide a well-rounded understanding of the subject as a whole, you’ll also have the flexibility to focus on those areas that interest you most – developing the knowledge, experience and skills you’ll need to fulfil your professional or academic ambitions. As such, we cover a wide range of specialist areas that underpin research into key global challenges, including materials chemistry, drug discovery, green and sustainable chemistry, catalysis, computational chemical modelling, spectroscopy, and synthetic chemistry.

**FEATURES AND BENEFITS**

- We are investing £115m to transform the way we teach and you learn in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Open from Autumn 2023, our new Dalton building will enhance collaboration between students, staff and industry and provide new and improved teaching spaces.

- Over the last three years, we have invested half a million pounds to enhance our undergraduate lab experience and extend our wide range of analytical instrumentation, ensuring that you will benefit from a professional work environment. This includes a high-specification lab area with industry-standard equipment and an adjacent computer suite.

- Our teaching is supported by a range of technological innovations including videos, specialist software and interactive simulations via VR to help you to prepare for practicals in advance – building your confidence in using lab equipment and allowing you to practice, virtually, from home.

- We have embedded career preparation activities into each year of your course to help you explore options, gain key employability skills, build your confidence to apply for work experience and plan your future graduate career.

- You can take the four-year route, spending a year studying overseas in Europe, North America or Australia, or boost your career prospects with a 9-12 month placement. This may be subject to availability.

- Apply for the BSc (Hons) course now and you can choose to move on to the integrated masters degree (MChem) at the end of Year 2. As long as you’re working to a high enough standard you can then switch over to the MChem route.

- Our diverse research activities directly inform our teaching. These focus on alleviating global problems to create a sustainable and healthy future. Specific areas of interest include hydrogen fuel cells, catalysts, biosensors, drug discovery, green chemistry and the chemical monitoring of environmental change.
