Physics is the study of the universe--exploring the basic rules that dictate the behaviour of matter and energy, from subatomic particles to the evolution of galaxies.

Physics will shape many of the radical solutions needed to tackle global issues. Begin to play your part in this exciting future by taking our cutting-edge and flexible course accredited by the UK Institute of Physics.

Not many universities can say they’ve been teaching physics since 1896. Or that they’re one of the birth places of string theory and helped lead the successful hunt for the closest planet outside our solar system. We’re a hub for scientific excellence and home to academics leading the way in everything from quantum materials to the next generation of radiation detectors.

Our courses are informed by our cutting-edge research. You will get actively involved in our work through final year projects that provide you with those precious transferable skills that are essential to successful careers in any area of STEM and beyond.

Our courses are also informed by our dedication to teaching. In the first year you’ll build a solid foundation in both theoretical and experimental physics. And you won’t be anonymous or alone: you will have small group tutorials with a dedicated academic member of staff. These sessions supplement the knowledge you acquire in lecture and large group workshops while also leading to new friendships and a sense of belonging in a broader community. Then, take what you learn in your classes and tutorials, and demonstrate your brilliance in new and inclusive ways using our authentic methods of assessment.

In subsequent years, you will be able to tailor your degree to your interests and passions through our Physics Streams outlined below:

General Physics Stream: The most versatile stream. Pick and choose which subjects interest you and build a kaleidoscope of experimental, theoretical, and computational knowledge.

Theoretical Physics Stream: For those interested in unlocking the fundamental principles that govern the universe: from Einstein’s relativity to the symmetries of quantum mechanics and beyond. This stream is the most mathematically oriented and abstract of our streams. Master the tools needed to push the limits of human understanding and solve the deepest problems that challenge us.

Astrophysics Stream: Explore the universe by learning about the hunt for planets and life outside our solar system, the birth and death of stars, the formation of galaxies, and the mysteries of cosmology. Learn about the sky above us and our place in the universe. Use the observatory to enhance your quest.

Physics with AI Stream: Prepare for the future in a world transformed by the AI revolution. Learn about the technologies underpinning the 2024 Physics Nobel Prize by studying Physics with AI. You will learn programming, modern statistical methods, and machine learning and get to apply your skills to an AI driven problem in your final year project.

In all these streams, we have an eye on your bright post-degree future. We support this amazing future both through the final year projects that are tailored to your stream and through the small group employability tutorials that help you put your best foot forward with future employers. Be ready for any career you choose!

And we mean any career. Queen Mary Physics graduates go on to work in aerospace engineering, quantitative finance, data science, consulting, the technology industry, physics, mathematics, and beyond!
