Software Engineering is the design, implementation, and testing of complex software applications. In this course you will learn about the production of high quality, large-scale, enterprise-wide, and complex software applications.
This Level 6 top-up course is validated by Sheffield Hallam University and offers a natural progression from the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Computing (Software Engineering) or a Foundation Degree (FdSc) in this subject area. It will appeal to those who want to
further develop skills in programming techniques, tools and processes, and the project management practices used to support and control such projects.
In the study of software architecture and design, you will have the opportunity to apply the principles of good design, usability and security to the development of software. Adopting a practical approach, different design techniques and architectural styles will be used to develop solutions that are the evaluated against industry-standard criteria. In Semester 1 you will also work as part of a team to design, plan and support the development of IT projects by applying the relevant language and tools. This will involve practical exercises, using problems of graded difficulty that will challenge you to develop your skills and collaborate with others.

In the second semester, the Secure Software Engineering module explores the main objectives of security, relating them to the problems faced in the construction stage of large and complex applications. This will involve the study of information security fundamentals, cryptography, digital identity management and access control, vulnerabilities and protection and defence mechanisms and tools. Students will also be required to undertake a development project, creating a significant software deliverable, guided by a dedicated project supervisor. This offers the opportunity to apply their knowledge and develop the skills needed to transition from undergraduate study to the workplace, or further study.
Students benefit from a multifaceted learning experience, and the subject is delivered through lectures, hands-on lab sessions, tutorials, practice-based applied learning, teamwork and group-based learning with opportunity for self-study and provision of regular feedback.

On completion, students may pursue post graduate study, for example:
MSc Computing
MSc Big Data Analytics
MSc Artificial Intelligence
MSc Information Technology Management
The course prepares you for graduate employment and a career in:

Software development
Web based applications
Mobile app development
Systems and IT support
Project management
IT consultancy

1 year, Full time, 12 hours per week.
The course is delivered over two Semesters and students will complete 120 credits at Level 6.

For further information please contact us by visiting the contact page on the college website.

Although every care has been taken to ensure that the information contained within this document is accurate, there may be changes to this programme and provision.
