MSc Medical Engineering is a postgraduate taught course in a highly interdisciplinary field that involves applying engineering, computer science, physical, chemical and mathematical principles to the analysis of biological, medical, behavioural and health-related problems. Medical engineers develop innovative medical devices, implants and procedures to help prevent, diagnose and treat diseases. Success relies on an in-depth understanding of engineering and computer design concepts, combined with a broad knowledge of physiological and anatomical systems. The programme is built based upon the strong expertise that School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics (SECaM) has in (bio)medical engineering and nanotechnology as well as the long collaboration with the Peninsula Schools of Medicine & Dentistry, School of Biomedical Sciences, School of Biological & Marine Sciences and School of Health Professions at the University of Plymouth (UoP).<br/><br/>This course is available as one year course (or two year part-time) incorporating subjects including Nanoelectronics and Biosensors, Medical Data and Statistics, Engineering Research Methods and Professional Development, Medical Engineering and Biomechanics, Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology and Advanced Engineering Design. A summer research project will allow students to work on a project of their choosing, working alongside the international leading research being carried by a team of bioengineers and expert academics in the field. Students have the option to choose between two pathways; MSc Medical Engineering with Nanotechnology and MSc Medical with Biomedical Diagnostics. Students on the Biomedical Diagnostics pathway will be able to select specialty modules in one of the following areas; Cancer Biology, Clinical Neuroscience, Infection and Immunity. Both pathways are available as an intercalation course to Medical and Dental School students. <br/><br/>MSc Medical Engineering is designed to target previous graduates (engineering, computing, biomedical sciences, medicine, dentistry, biology, chemistry) who seek a career in the medical device and healthcare industry. No prerequisite specific knowledge in medical engineering or nanotechnology is required. It is also anticipated that the course will be suitable for mathematics, health profession and psychology graduates with sufficient science background and/or relevant industrial experience. <br/><br/>The programme is designed to provide students all the necessary transferrable skills and technical knowledge to succeed in one of the fastest growing industries in the UK and internationally. Medical Engineering graduates will be well-placed to gain employment and pursue successful careers in: Healthcare (including Hospitals, NHS), medical device industry, pharmaceutics, medical research, medicine, start-ups, teaching, consultancy and finance. Medical engineers can work as (bio)medical engineers, clinical engineers/scientists, medical research scientists, rehabilitation engineers, prosthetic design engineers, application engineers in medical devices, bioinstrumentation engineers and robotic surgical instruments engineers.
