Studying linguistics will enable you to learn about, understand and interpret many aspects of human language. On this Linguistics and Modern Languages joint honours degree, you will study the ‘science’ behind language, including possible sounds used in speech and their combination (phonetics, phonology), how words are built up morphology), what distinguishes sentences from just strings of words (syntax), meaning (semantics and pragmatics), the effect that society, culture and norms have upon language use (sociolinguistics) and how languages change over time. Level 3 qualifications can also be considered in conjunction with another qualification in a relevant Modern Language (e.g. grade C at A level or IB Higher). Please note: There is no specific modern language requirement as all of our Modern Languages degrees can be studied from beginner or advanced level.

Scottish Higher

Minimum of 5 Scottish Highers - some subject specific grades/Advanced Highers may be required.

Access to HE Diploma

Pass required. Can be considered in conjunction with A level or IB Higher in relevant modern language (not required for beginner's language route).

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

Pass required. Including: Grade H5 in relevant modern language (not required for modern language-beginners' route; Grade H5 in English Literature or English Language preferred but not required.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)

OCR Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma

Extended Project

Points can include a relevant Extended Project (EPQ) but must include a minimum 2 full A-levels, or equivalent. Please contact us for more information.

We will accept this qualification in conjunction with other level 3 qualifications.

T Level

T Level qualifications are accepted on a case by case basis.
