Physical geography examines natural processes and features such as climate change, landforms and ecosystems.

The first year offers a comprehensive introductory programme designed to build a foundation for advanced knowledge, understanding, and skills for geographers, geologists and environmental scientists. Your studies will seamlessly blend physical elements like landscapes, climate change, and natural hazards with human aspects including social exclusion, modernisation, identity politics, and urban development patterns. Alongside these geographical components, youll explore fundamental business concepts and sustainability practices. To strengthen your practical skills, youll engage in hands-on fieldwork experiences—conducting cartographic surveying on campus and participating in four, one-day field courses in Staffordshire.

In the second year, you will delve into key theoretical issues in more depth, gain practical hands-on experience with human geographical research techniques, and apply these skills during a residential field course. You will also develop your understanding of business processes and organisational performance.

During your final year, youll embark on an independent research project, crafting a significant dissertation on a topic of your choice. This capstone project will empower you to set research goals, conduct fieldwork, gather data, and critically analyse your results—showcasing your expertise, and preparing you for professional work or further academic study.

* We have compared the positivity ratings of all participating UK institutions using the NSS 2025 sector data to determine Keeles position relative to other broad-based universities (i.e. excluding specialist institutions and further education colleges).

About Keele

Keele University was established in 1949 by the former Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University.
