This degree combines the study of linguistics with French, to explore how language works and what it does. You spend two thirds of your time concentrating on the structure, history and sociological aspects of the English language. The remaining third is devoted to studying French language and culture. You will spend a year abroad in Stage 3, working or studying in a French-speaking country.

As the course contains a combination of scientific thinking, language skills, and mathematical reasoning, it may be especially suited to the personality of students who have enjoyed both mathematics/science and arts/humanities subjects. Scottish qualifications can be taken in more than one sitting.

With grade 5 in French at Higher Level. Candidates who have some background in Maths and Science may be interested in the cognitive/brain science and quantitative elements of the course. Candidates who prefer Arts and Humanities subjects may be interested in the historical, sociological, and literary elements of the course.
