This includes:<br/><br/><br/>• Establishing identity<br/><br/><br/><br/>I- nvestigating suspicious deaths<br/>• Identifying victims of mass disasters<br/><br/><br/>It is a specialised field within forensic science. It requires in-depth training in anatomy and skeletal osteology (the study of bones and the skeletal system).<br/><br/>The course focuses on human anatomy. Identifying the dead depends on both hard tissue, like bones, and soft tissues, such as muscles. You will get hands-on experience with skeletal remains. You’ll focus on recovery, identification, and analysis. This will happen through real-case scenarios.<br/><br/>Year 1 - Foundation in Applied Sciences<br/>This course is run in collaboration with Dundee & Angus College. In your first year, you will undertake the HNC in Applied Sciences. This will build your knowledge in biology, chemistry, and laboratory skills. Successful completion of this year secures advanced Level 2 entry at the University of Dundee.<br/><br/>Year 2 - Core Anatomy and Practical Skills<br/>At Level 2, you will begin to focus on anatomy. You will study:<br/><br/><br/>- the systems of the body<br/><br/><br/>- the variation between animals and humans<br/><br/><br/>- cell biology<br/><br/><br/>- molecular mechanisms and processes relevant to anatomy<br/><br/><br/>- physiology, pharmacology and anatomy of different systems of the body<br/><br/><br/>To prepare you for designing and carrying out projects later in your course you will develop practical skills in:<br/><br/><br/>• Laboratory techniques<br/><br/><br/><br/>• Data analysis and experiment design<br/><br/><br/><br/>Years 3 and 4 - Advanced Forensic Applications and Research<br/>Once you’re in Levels 3 and 4 you can transfer on to anatomy if you find your interests have changed.<br/><br/>In Levels 3 and 4, you will deepen your expertise in anatomy and forensic anthropology. You will study advanced modules covering:<br/><br/><br/>• Osteology and skeletal analysis<br/><br/><br/><br/>• Dissection using Thiel-embalmed cadavers – a unique hands-on experience that sets Dundee apart.<br/><br/><br/><br/>• Gross anatomy of organs and systems<br/><br/><br/><br/>• Insight into forensic professions<br/><br/><br/><br/>You will also complete a final-year research project in forensic anthropology.
