Zoology is the scientific study of the animal kingdom. It encompasses the molecular building blocks of life up to the way that animals behave and interact with their environment. Zoologists understand the diversity of animal forms, and the ways that they function. Professional Zoologists may apply their specialist knowledge in a variety of fields including nature conservation, animal production or scientific research.<br/><br/>On the Zoology programme you will study everything from animal cell biology, physiology and behaviour, how animals are shaped by evolutionary forces and how animal populations and communities function. With opportunities for intensive field study during every year of the programme, field courses will build on your practical lab and experimental design skills. In your final year, you will be tasked with completing your own fully independent research project. Throughout the programme, you will develop team-working, independent-working, problem-solving and communication skills, all of which are in demand by employers.<br/><br/>This 3 year BSc can also be converted into an integrated Masters (MBiol) with an optional additional year of specialist training, to study advanced research topics and to carry out your own extended research project.<br/><br/><strong>Course highlights</strong><br/><br/><br/>• Intensively study terrestrial and aquatic zoology at the scale of the individual organism, to the population and whole ecosystem, in the lab and in the field.<br/><br/><br/><br/>• Optional field course to South African game reserve, which involves a 2-week programme of lectures, seminars and extensive fieldwork.<br/><br/><br/><br/>• Choose optional industrial work placements, study abroad or combined study and work abroad.<br/><br/><br/><br/>• Optional non-residential field course in urban ecology where you will evaluate the structure and function of biodiversity in Leeds and develop ideas on how to make cities more ecologically sustainable.<br/><br/><br/><br/>• Gain hands on experience of marine organisms and their habitats, expanding your knowledge of animal behaviour, animal development, evolution and adaptation.<br/><br/><br/><br/>• Residential field course in terrestrial and freshwater zoology, based in a UK upland environment.<br/><br/>

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)
Applicants with BTEC Diploma or Extended Diploma are required to have A-level Biology. If the BTEC subject is Applied Science, applicants can have A-level Mathematics, Chemistry or Physics instead. Distinctions in the BTEC subject and an A in Biology A-level, (or B in Mathematics, Chemistry or Physics A-level if studying BTEC Applied Science), are required. Applicants with BTEC Extended Certificate qualifications must have at least 2 A-levels and at least one of these must be in Biology. Distinction in the BTEC Extended Certificate and A in A-level Biology is required.

Extended Project
When an applicant is taking any of the following: Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) Cambridge International Project Qualification (Cambridge IPQ) Core Maths (if A-level Maths or Further Maths isn't studied as a full A-level) AS Maths (if A-level Maths or Further Maths isn't studied as a full A-level) Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate It will be considered alongside A-levels and may attract an alternative offer in addition to the standard offer. If you are taking A-levels, this would be a 1 grade drop from the standard offer. For example an A in one of the above qualifications with ABB at A-level (BSc applicants).
