Climate change is one of the greatest threats to our earth system, biodiversity and public health. Our oceans, cryosphere, land and atmosphere, as well as the ecosystems they support, are being exposed to warming, sea level rise, coast erosion, habitat and biodiversity loss and pollutants. We need to understand the fundamental science behind our changing climate in order to develop solutions to these global environmental challenges.

The programme in Climate Science aims to provide students with core knowledge on the impact of climate change on our Earth System through modules in ocean sciences, ecology, physical and human geography. The programme is focused on developing problem solving, numerical and practical skills through training in numerical coding, laboratory classes and research-focused projects. Alongside learning about the fundamentals of climate science, you will be introduced to adaptation and mitigation options and sustainability.

We have strong links with scientists from the National Oceanography Centre in Liverpool, who provide guest lectures and supervision of projects.

This programme is available with either a Year in China or a Year Abroad. The Year in China offers undergraduate students the opportunity to spend one year at our joint venture, Xian Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), following XJTLUs BA China Studies degree classes. XJTLU is a fully English-speaking university, located in Suzhou. The Year Abroad offers students the opportunity to spend a full academic year studying at one of our partner universities around the world, following a mixture of culture and/or discipline-related modules. If you wish to study this programme with a Year in China or a Year Abroad you will have the opportunity to apply after you arrive at Liverpool.
