Egyptology and Classics BA (Hons)

A joint degree in Egyptology (50%) offers you the chance to study the rich material, visual and linguistic culture of Ancient Egypt in the wider cultural context of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East. Year one offers a broad introduction to Egyptian culture and begins language training with Middle Egyptian; years two and three build on these foundations with both language-based and thematic modules on religion, society, settlement, and international relations. In your final year, you can choose to complete a dissertation in Egyptology; an in-depth independent investigation on a topic of your choice.<br/><br/>A combined degree with Classical Studies (50%) provides a broad, coherent understanding of the cultures, histories and literatures of ancient Greece and Rome. It offers interdisciplinary engagement with literary texts, material and visual culture, archaeological data and theoretical approaches, developing your ability to evaluate ancient evidence critically, synthesise arguments, combine data, and situate the Classical world in its wider Mediterranean, Near Eastern and north African context. You may also choose to complete a Classical Studies dissertation in your final year, showcasing your knowledge and skills through independent research. Learning ancient languages, though always encouraged, is not required in this programme.<br/><br/>This programme is available with either a Year in China or a Year Abroad. The Year in China offers undergraduate students the opportunity to spend one year at our joint venture, Xian Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU). You can choose either the China Studies Track, where you will take courses from the China Studies Degree, the Creative Track, or the Entrepreneurship Track . XJTLU is a fully English-speaking university, located in Suzhou. The Year Abroad offers students the opportunity to spend a full academic year studying at one of our partner universities around the world, following a mixture of culture and/or discipline-related modules. If you wish to study this programme with a Year in China or a Year Abroad you will have the opportunity to apply after you arrive at Liverpool.<br/><br/>Combined Degrees<br/><br/>Most Combined Degrees allow you to adapt the weighting of each by 25% after the first year, helping you to keep your options open. Please note, however, students studying either a Business or Economics pathway in combination with another subject cannot increase from 25% to 50% or from 50% to 75% and it is not possible to transfer from a 50% to 75% Law.
