You will take German language at beginners or advanced level working towards becoming proficient, alongside cultural modules each semester, in addition to modules in your minor subject. Cultural modules cover a range of specialisms, enabling the study of the literature, film, sociolinguistics, histories and societies of German-speaking countries. A Year Abroad is spent in a German-speaking country as a student at a university, an assistant in a school, or on a work placement. If you combine German with another language, you will split the year between two countries.

A Minor in Portuguese enables students to attain proficiency by graduation, through structured and immersive language training. Students develop advanced skills in writing, reading, speaking and listening in one of the world’s most important languages, spoken in Portugal, Brazil and across Africa, and sustained by dynamic heritage and diasporic communities in North America and Asia. Proficiency in Portuguese opens access to dynamic global regions and to diverse artistic traditions throughout the Portuguese-speaking world. An optional Year Abroad in Portugal or Brazil further strengthens fluency and intercultural competence, while enhancing students career prospects worldwide.

Most Combined Degrees allow you to adapt the weighting of each by 25% after the first year, helping you to keep your options open. Please note, however, students studying either a Business or Economics pathway in combination with another subject cannot increase from 25% to 50% or from 50% to 75% and it is not possible to transfer from a 50% to 75% Law.
