From stock markets and investment strategies to insurance and risk management, high-level quantitative thinking sits at the heart of these major financial decisions. If you enjoy mathematical challenges and want to apply them directly to real financial systems, our BSc Financial Mathematics course is for you.
This accredited degree, delivered jointly with Nottingham University Business School, gives you the best of both worlds. Around 75% of the course focuses on mathematics, while the remainder introduces you to key financial principles. You will graduate with deep mathematical expertise alongside a clear understanding of how financial markets and institutions operate.
As you would expect, there is an emphasis on mathematical concepts – but with a practical application, too. We believe in collaboration and that’s why our students, industry professionals and alumni joined forces with our dedicated staff to design degrees suitable for the real world. Our co-created curriculum is redefining studying maths.
You’ll learn from academics who are active researchers - and whose work directly feeds into the course. This means we can offer an extensive range of core and optional modules, allowing you to tailor your degree based on your own strengths and interests.
In your first year, you’ll build a strong foundation in core mathematics topics such as calculus, probability and statistics. This will develop your skills in problem solving and analytical thinking. You’ll also be introduced to business, finance, accounting and insurance.
As you progress, you can explore advanced topics in mathematical finance and modelling, while also developing expertise in finance and risk management.
A stand-out feature of the course is the final-year mathematics group project. Working in teams and guided by our expert staff, you will tackle a substantial financial mathematics problem. This is an opportunity to sharpen your analytical thinking while also developing professional skills in collaboration, communication and report writing.
