What is an ISIC card and how to get one
For students studying abroad, it's important to have identification on you at all times. Enter the ISIC card!
Whether you're a UK student off to study abroad, or an international student hopping overseas to attend a UK university, an ISIC card is something you'll want to have in your back pocket. This international student card isn't a new concept but can easily be missed off your uni prep list, so here's a quick look at what you need to remember.
What is an ISIC card?
ISIC stands for International Student Identification Card. Quite simply, it's a way of showing that you are in fact a student. It's widely recognised as legitimate proof. It's a handy way for you to prove your identity without having to carry around your passport or driving licence.
ISIC card benefits
Your ISIC card is more than just identification. With an ISIC card, you'll get access to lots of student discounts, like the TOTUM card (previously NUS). You can currently get discounts for places like McDonald's, Booking.com and Samsung! What's even better is the ISIC discounts are available for anyone aged 12 and over who are currently studying, while the TOTUM card is for university students only.
Are you eligible for an ISIC card?
Any full-time student at school, college, or university is eligible for this card. When applying for your card, you'll need to provide proof of your student status. Your card will be valid up until the end of your study year and then you'll need to renew.
How to get your student card
It's pretty simple - head to the ISIC website, click "get your card" and place your order! It's here that you'll be asked for identification to prove you're a student. You'll be asked which country the card is being issued to, as well as pay the cost for the card upfront. Typically, the card takes 3-4 weeks to arrive, so keep an eye out on the post!
How much does it cost?
Depending on where you live, the cost will vary. In the UK, the ISIC card will cost you £12 for a virtual card. If you're looking to get a physical card, you can expect this to be £15.
