Run in collaboration with Dundee & Angus College
This programme is delivered through a collaborative partnership between Abertay University and Dundee & Angus College. In Year 1, students study for a Higher National Certificate (HNC) through a collaborative delivery model involving both Dundee & Angus College and Abertay University. During this first year, teaching is shared across both institutions, with students spending time on each campus and benefiting from the complementary strengths, facilities, and expertise of college and university staff. This approach provides a strong technical and analytical foundation, alongside the development of core professional and management‑related skills.
On successful completion of the HNC, students are guaranteed the opportunity to progress directly into Year 2 of the Civil and Environmental Engineering degree (BEng or MEng) at Abertay University.
This integrated route is designed to support a smooth transition from college‑style learning into the university environment, while building the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills required for leadership and management roles within engineering contexts.

Why study Civil and Environmental Engineering?
Study Civil and Environmental Engineering and gain the knowledge and skills you need to become a Chartered Civil Engineer. This course has 5 professional accreditations, a practical learning approach, and 12 week industry work placements built in. Abertay is the TOP UK Modern University for Civil Engineering (The Times 2025).
You’ll gain a firm grounding across a wide range of civil and environmental engineering applications. You'll get plenty of practical and hands-on experience through placements with industry partners such as Transport Scotland, Balfour Beatty and BEAR Scotland.
There is a big shortage of civil engineers in Britain and Europe, making you hugely employable as soon as you graduate.
Practical, hands-on experience
You’ll also get hands-on experience with the construction challenge in year two. This is where you work in teams to plan, project manage and construct a scaled-down version of real-world structures such as bridges, pavilions, wind turbine footings and other civil engineering projects.
Almost 100% employment after graduation
There's a global shortage of qualified civil engineers, leading to nearly 100% employment after graduation.
Plus, due to smaller class sizes our approach is more personal, which means we have more time to devote to each student.
Flexible degree - tailor your studies
You’ll learn to contribute to the health and wellbeing of individuals, communities, and societies by understanding interactions between buildings, infrastructure, and the environment.
If your interests and career plans change, you can switch to another related degree at the end of first year. This is one of a portfolio of three engineering courses. Find out more.
Five professional accreditations
You can choose either the five-year Integrated Masters (MEng) course, making you a Chartered Engineer (CEng), or the four-year Bachelor's (BEng Hons) degree, leading to an Incorporated Engineer (IEng). Both depend on successful graduation. Find out more.
This course ranked 1st in Scotland for Student Satisfaction (Complete University Guide 2025) and we are the TOP UK modern university for Civil Engineering (The Times Good University Guide 2025).
