What you will learn
The core curriculum for this course comprises laboratory work, data skills and field classes which aim to foster teamwork and a strong group identity throughout your time at Birkbeck. It also ensures you gain core scientific skills in data analysis and laboratory techniques.
At the start of your degree, you will be able to follow your interests, choosing from one of five pathways comprising compulsory and option modules from the following complementary subject areas:
• Astronomy and Planetary Science + Bioscience
• Astronomy and Planetary Science + Data Science
• Earth and Environment + Bioscience
• Bioscience + Data Science
• Cognition and Neuroscience + Bioscience
How you will learn
This course is available to study full- or part-time and is taught via lectures, seminars and tutorials.
Our teaching philosophy is based around flexibility, allowing you to fit this degree around other commitments. Our core teaching is in the evening and our bioscience modules also offer afternoon classes. Some of our modules may also offer pre-recorded lectures that you can access whenever you need, and classes that you can attend online using our online teaching platform. There are also two daytime field trips.
Foundation Year
If you opt for the Foundation Year route, this will fully prepare you for undergraduate study. It is ideal if you are returning to study after a gap, or if you have not previously studied the relevant subjects, or if you didn't achieve the grades you need for a place on your chosen undergraduate degree.
