Our BA in English Language and Literature helps you understand, analyse and articulate solutions to complex problems facing society today.
You'll look at how language is structured and used in the social world, exploring the relationships between linguistic structures, individual identity and social organisation. You’ll also develop skills for analysing language as it is used in real contexts.
Alongside this, you'll study writing from different periods and cultures, across the principal literary genres. But your studies won’t be limited to the printed word. We’re interested in the connections between literature and film, art, history, technology, language and everyday life, and our teaching reflects these interests.
You’ll explore how literature addresses social, environmental and economic concerns and consider questions around inclusion and sustainable futures.
Throughout your degree, you’ll build career-enhancing skills by analysing and producing different types of texts, working with specialised software, examining real-world examples of language, constructing arguments and communicating ideas to different audiences.
You’ll graduate with a range of professional skills, including collaboration, communication and critical thinking. You'll also have an understanding of the ethical, social and linguistic challenges that face contemporary society and industry coupled with the ideas and confidence to respond to them.
