Acting Higher National Diploma - HND

The HNC is a nationally recognised qualification and is the first year of the course before the HND in Acting. \*

This course is designed to prepare you for the realities of today's creative industries, where successful practitioners are adaptable, collaborative and entrepreneurial. Through a range of industry-focused projects, you'll develop the skills, experience and professional confidence needed to build a sustainable career across the creative sector.

You will have the opportunity to create, produce, and tour performances; deliver workshops in schools, theatres, and community settings across Yorkshire; and collaborate on ambitious creative projects that reflect current industry practice. Alongside developing your acting, movement and vocal skills, you'll explore directing, producing, dramaturgy, facilitation, creative leadership and project management, allowing you to discover where your strengths and ambitions lie.

Working in our professional performance spaces and with external partners, you'll create and deliver work for a range of audiences while gaining valuable industry experience. You'll collaborate with others, develop your creative voice, lead projects and respond to live briefs, building the confidence and versatility needed for a career in the creative industries.

Whether you want to perform, direct, produce, work as a dramaturg or lead creative projects, this course will help you build the skills, experience and professional network to launch your career. Graduating with a strong portfolio, real industry experience and the confidence to succeed in today's creative industries.

The course tutors bring real industry experience and will guide you in identifying which area best suits your creative talent, while also providing valuable knowledge to help you make connections and remain employable in an ever-changing industry.

The HNC in Acting will build a foundation to support your next steps, whether that’s progressing to drama school, continuing onto the HND or Top Up course, or preparing to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Whatever path you choose, you will be equipped with the confidence and knowledge to move forward in your creative industry.

You will be taught through a combination of lectures and practical activities that help to embed learning and appeal to a variety of learning styles. Your learning will be supported by Microsoft Teams, an on-line electronic resource platform managed by your module tutors, by the excellent Learning Hub at the Aireville Campus in addition to the College’s Study Support Centre. Average class sizes for HE courses are usually between 6 and 15 students.

You will need to undertake significant independent study outside of taught sessions. You will spend the equivalent of 9 hours per week in College, attending informative lectures, workshops and tutorials. Alongside this, you will be expected to undertake 10-12 hours of independent study each week, such as reading journal articles and books, undertaking research from academic and technical texts and preparing for assessments.

You will receive feedback on your formal assessments within four working weeks of the submission date. Your overall grade for the course and your Higher National Certificate classification is based on the grades obtained for all the units studied.
