The programme is intended for graduates who have prior experience working in patient-facing healthcare rather than those with a first degree in a bioscience or life sciences subject, as required for our Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) programme. The early years of the Healthcare Entre Medicine programme include enhanced foundational science content integrated with clinical components.

Upon joining the programme you will undertake a mandatory four-week introductory period specifically for Healthcare Entry Medicine students, which includes an orientation week with the year 2 cohort of the conventional programme. You will then progress to your first year of HEM which will bring together science and clinical content, delivered alongside clinical placements. Whilst you will undertake small group teaching and clinical placements in your HEM cohort, some of this content will be delivered alongside students from years 1 and 2 of our conventional medical degree. The clinical elements will be organised through placements in general practice and hospital. Your first year will be characterised by small group learning, clinical placements (including a longitudinal GP placement) and content that has been adapted for digital platforms and asynchronous learning, requiring an organised and self-directed approach.

HEM year 2 will build on the foundations of year 1 and you will become increasingly integrated with the wider cohort undertaking our conventional medical degree, with some variations to the project work. Both year 1 and 2 bring together science and clinical practice in blocks organised around the human life cycle and common pathological processes. You will focus on the care of patients with common conditions in a range of clinical settings. You will also follow patients for prolonged periods of time to learn how to deliver whole-person care. This part of the programme is underpinned by study in biomedical and population sciences.

HEM years 3 and 4 are oriented towards future practice and include the opportunity to undertake elective study abroad. For these two years you will follow the same programme as all our other medical students. You will also conduct quality improvement projects and develop skills to transform patient and population health globally.

From the start of your course, you will be introduced to patients and clinicians. Through the programme there are a series of project modules, which offer a range of different learning, some of which can be adapted for student choice. We are looking to grow the range of Projects (and choice) we offer, and this may result in changes to the Project modules in your programme.

Please note that attendance from the start of the programme, commencing mid-August, is mandatory. This is a full-time degree programme and, due to the accelerated and condensed nature, will require a high level of commitment from learners.

Key benefits:
• The first accelerated medicine programme in the UK designed specifically for the needs of qualified healthcare professionals.

• Accredited by the General Medical Council (GMC), this Primary Medical Qualification entitles the holder to apply to the GMC for registration to practise medicine in the UK.

• Integrated medical science with clinical teaching; and focus on learning in close contact with patients.

• Learn from some of the world’s most influential clinicians and scientists, who are global leaders in life sciences and medical research.

• Partner hospitals include Guy’s, King’s College and St Thomas’ Hospitals – three of the most renowned and busy teaching hospitals in London.

• Students benefit from clinical placements at district general hospitals located across the South of England and at over 350 general practices.
