Rural Veterinary Technology is the first fulltime programme of its kind in the UK, with the aim of developing the skills needed for graduates to work as large animal veterinary technicians. Rural Veterinary Technology is the first fulltime programme of its kind in the UK, with the aim of developing the skills needed for graduates to work as large animal veterinary technicians. As part of the new School of Veterinary Medicine and Biosciences, students will gain hands-on experience with a range of production and large animal species and work with staff to learn skills such as body condition scoring, locomotion analysis and foot trimming. Core skills such as communication and animal handling are taught from the first week, ensuring graduates are confident and capable when going onto work.
Within the first year, key concepts of working with rural species in farm environments will be taught, with an emphasis on practical skills. The second year of the programme focuses on application of this knowledge and understanding and refining skills.
The programme can also be used as an access route onto the BVSci programme at Aberdeen.
