Fine Art and Material Practice Bachelor of Arts (with Honours) - BA (Hons)

This Degree is awarded by the University of Gloucestershire, based at Bristol School of Art in the heart of Bristol. We aim to provide a learning environment that enables you to explore and define your creative identity as artists or makers at professional level. Our belief is that through engagement with art and material practice you will develop a methodology of understanding and responding to your lived experience. You will have the opportunity to experiment and specialise in a range of different techniques including drawing, printmaking, painting, 3D processes (sculpture, ceramics, small metal and textiles) and digital processes (Adobe Suite, photography, moving image), which will contribute to your own sense of an individual creative identity.\

We promote a learning culture of curiosity, skills building through experiment and practice, critical reflection and debate, rooted in knowledge of historical and contemporary practices of artistry and making.\
You will engage with current debates, research and historical discourses which will help contextualise your understanding and develop your ambition and how you choose to define your practice.  Alongside the continuing development of your own studio work, you will undertake modules that require you to research and engage with examples of practice within social, community and other contexts. You will experience taught workshops, independent studio/workshop activities, seminars, tutorials and lectures.\
Later studio practice modules will build upon your skills encouraging you to be increasingly autonomous and independent. You will research the ways in which artists and makers, both in the past and now, contribute to the wider cultural, commercial, and social environments. \
A key focus of the course is employability and transferable skills to help ensure you secure meaningful employment post study. Creative and critical thinking is at the heart of the programmes deign, which you will be supported to develop alongside wider skills in terms of technical ability and interpersonal skills and collaboration.  These will be supported through professional practice activities and assignments including an off-site exhibition. Your artistic output is the focus for assessment throughout the degree, which is enhanced through sector-based opportunities such as funding applications and curation of exhibitions. There are no exams with assessment framed around portfolio work, presentation of practical work and formal presentations.

You can leave this course after successfully achieving year 1 and you will be awarded a Certificate of Higher Education in this subject or a Diploma of Higher Education and the end of year 2.
