Music Performance Bachelor of Music (with Honours) - MusB (Hon)

The BMus (Hons) Music is a three-year, full-time undergraduate programme for students who want to develop as confident, skilled and adaptable musicians. Students follow the parent BMus (Hons) Music route through Levels 4 and 5 and may either remain on the broad BMus (Hons) Music route at Level 6 or complete a named pathway through their Level 6 route/pathway module choice. Possible final awards are BMus (Hons) Music, BMus (Hons) Music (Songwriting) and BMus (Hons) Music (Vocal Performance). 

The programme combines conservatoire-informed practical performance training with the wider benefits of a university music education. Students build secure technical foundations, creative confidence, critical thinking, collaborative capability and an informed understanding of contemporary musical practice and music industries.  

The curriculum is shaped around six connected areas: Performing Music; Understanding and Researching Music; Creating Music; Industry Readiness; Preparation and Reflection; and Professional Collaboration. A key strength of the programme is that students learn together while developing their own musical identity. Many modules are taught through shared sessions rather than separate classes for every style or specialism. Within this shared model, students apply common musical, creative, critical and professional ideas to their own practice. They can shape assessments around their own repertoire, creative work, research interests, performance contexts, digital materials and career aims. This makes the programme suitable for classical, rock, pop, folk, jazz, musical theatre-influenced, vocal, instrumental, songwriting and hybrid musicians. 

The pathway structure is deliberately flexible. Students can weave their musical focus through the programme from the start by choosing repertoire, creative materials, research topics, digital evidence and professional contexts that reflect their interests, without needing to commit to a named pathway at Level 4 or Level 5. The final award title is determined by the student's Level 6 route/pathway module: The Psychology of Music Performance for the BMus (Hons) Music route, Realising Original Songs for BMus (Hons) Music (Songwriting), or Vocal Health and Specialist Vocal Performance 2 for BMus (Hons) Music (Vocal Performance).
