Crime affects individuals, families and communities in complex ways. Understanding how society responds, supports victims/survivors and encourages rehabilitation is vital to creating a fairer and more effective criminal justice system.
If you're interested in crime, justice and social change, this course will take you beyond theory and into the realities of criminal justice practice. You'll explore how the system operates, why people offend, how victims/survivors experience the justice process, and how professionals work to reduce harm and improve outcomes.
Throughout your studies, you'll examine key issues including policing, sentencing, rehabilitation, safeguarding, youth offending, hate crime, extremism and technology's role within criminal justice. You'll be encouraged to question current practice, evaluate evidence and consider how positive change can be achieved across the sector. You will learn stress management techniques to support your wellbeing whilst working in challenging but rewarding criminal justice roles.
What makes Northampton distinctive is the emphasis on real-world learning. You'll have opportunities to shadow criminal justice professionals, take part in practical exercises and undertake work-based learning and a final year voluntary placement with local criminal justice agencies. These experiences help you connect academic learning with professional practice while developing the confidence and skills employers value.
You'll learn from a multidisciplinary team with experience across criminal justice and develop skills in active listening, communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, expressing empathy and defensible decision-making.
By graduation, you'll have gained practical experience and a strong understanding of the challenges facing modern criminal justice. Whether you're interested in policing, probation, prisons, rehabilitation, community justice, safeguarding or wider criminal justice services, you'll be well prepared to take the next step in making a positive impact.
