Early Childhood Studies Bachelor of Arts (with Honours) - BA (Hons)

Early Childhood Studies BA (Hons) explores the development of children from conception to the age of eight, examining the factors that shape childhood experiences and outcomes. You'll study children within the context of families, communities and wider national and international environments, developing a broad understanding of contemporary early childhood practice.

A key strength of the course is its interdisciplinary approach. Drawing on psychology, sociology, early years pedagogy, policy, law, health, philosophy, leadership and management, you'll gain insight into childhood from multiple perspectives and learn how different factors influence children's development and wellbeing.

Practical experience is integrated throughout the degree. Placements in every year of study allow you to apply academic learning in professional settings, helping you build confidence, develop professional skills and gain valuable experience working with children and families.

You'll benefit from specialist sessions led by professionals working in areas such as special educational needs, social work, cultural diversity and creative and therapeutic approaches. These experiences help connect theory with current professional practice and broaden your understanding of the diverse needs of children and families.

The course includes Paediatric First Aid training and offers the opportunity to complete the Early Childhood Graduate Practitioner Competencies. The programme has been awarded the Early Childhood Studies Degrees Network (ECSDN) Quality Mark in recognition of its commitment to professional practice and practical skill development.

By graduation, you'll have developed a strong understanding of early childhood development alongside practical and professional skills that can support careers in early years education and care, health and social care, family support and related sectors. The degree also provides a strong foundation for progression into teaching and other postgraduate professional routes.
