Behind every mental health challenge is a person with their own experiences, circumstances and story. Understanding those experiences and knowing how to support people effectively is at the heart of psychological approaches to mental health.
This degree combines the scientific study of behaviour, thoughts and emotions with a specialist focus on mental health and wellbeing. You'll explore how psychology is used to understand mental health difficulties, promote wellbeing and inform interventions that can make a meaningful difference to people's lives.
Alongside core areas of psychology, including cognitive, developmental, biological and social psychology, you'll develop specialist knowledge of mental health conditions, psychological assessment, therapeutic approaches and evidence-based interventions. You'll learn how psychological theory is applied in practice and gain insight into supporting individuals across a range of health, wellbeing and community settings.
A strong emphasis on practical experience helps bring your learning to life. Through placement opportunities in Years 2 and 3, you'll gain hands-on experience in psychology-related and mental health settings, developing professional skills and confidence while applying your learning in real-world contexts. You'll also have the option to undertake a year-long placement between Years 2 and 3 to further enhance your experience and employability.
Case studies, workshops and group discussions will help you explore contemporary issues in mental health, wellbeing and applied psychology. You'll also strengthen your research, critical thinking, communication and ethical decision-making skills, all highly valued across psychology-related professions.
Whether you're interested in mental health services, wellbeing support, community-based roles or further professional training, this degree provides a strong foundation for your future.
The course is currently seeking accreditation from the British Psychological Society (BPS). Once accredited, successful graduates will be eligible for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC), an important first step towards a range of psychology careers and postgraduate study opportunities.
