BSc (Hons) Marketing with Events Management with Foundation Year is designed for students who want to study marketing and events but would benefit from an additional year to build confidence and academic skills before progressing to Level 4. The integrated Foundation Year provides a supportive introduction to university-level study and prepares students for progression to the degree through the development of academic, digital, numerical and communication skills, alongside collaborative project work. Students gain an understanding of contemporary business practice and the readiness required for subsequent study in marketing and events management.
Marketing is a driving force behind successful organisations and experiences. The degree combines the multi-faceted nature of marketing with the creative, operational and experiential dimensions of events management. Students develop a strong foundation in consumer behaviour, customer insight, branding, marketing communications, services marketing and strategic marketing, alongside an understanding of how events are researched, designed, promoted, delivered and evaluated.
Employability is embedded throughout the programme through authentic assessment, live client briefs and opportunities to engage with real event-related projects. Students apply theory to practical organisational challenges and develop experience in event planning, audience engagement, promotion, stakeholder management, operational delivery and evaluation. These activities support the development of a professional portfolio demonstrating both marketing capability and the practical skills required to contribute to the successful delivery of events.
The programme draws upon the established strengths and external recognition of Marketing at the University of Plymouth. The core marketing curriculum maintains alignment with the knowledge and professional capabilities valued by the Chartered Institute of Marketing, including customer insight, marketing planning, ethical decision-making and professional communication. Industry-informed teaching, employer engagement and support from the University’s Careers Service contribute to the continuing relevance of the programme to contemporary professional practice.
The interdisciplinary structure enables students to develop their knowledge progressively across marketing, business and events management. Students progress from foundational study in marketing, consumer behaviour and organisational operations to more specialist learning in festival and event management, event project delivery and evaluation, strategic marketing, event industry issues, and creativity and innovation in events. This integrated approach prepares graduates to work across commercial, cultural, sporting, community and visitor-economy contexts.
Students also explore local, national and global issues, including sustainability, inclusion, technological change and the wider social and economic impacts of marketing and events. Through collaborative projects and an individual final-year dissertation, students can investigate topics reflecting their academic interests and career aspirations while developing research, critical-thinking and problem-solving capabilities. The development of personal and professional resilience is embedded within the student experience, supporting confidence, adaptability, creativity, teamwork and reflective practice. Dedicated careers provision and an optional placement year support preparation for placements and graduate employment in marketing, events management and related industries.
