Electrical and electronic engineering is fundamental to many of today’s transformative technologies. From renewable energies to autonomous cars, and robotics to wireless communications, electrical and electronic engineering underpins all facets of our daily lives.
Your teaching will be informed by our research in areas such as:
* sensors
* flexible electronics
* medical robotics and imaging
* 5G and future 6G communications
* space systems.
You’ll get hands-on experience in our Future Technologies Labs and specialist facilities, using industry-standard equipment. You’ll also use our electronics and control engineering laboratories, and electrical drive systems, and could be part of one of the Formula Student or Medical Robotic teams.
The curriculum is informed by the National Engineering Policy Centre and Royal Academy of Engineering’s Engineers 2030 recommendations. You’ll prepare to meet emerging engineering priorities, gaining systems thinking and multidisciplinary problem-solving skills.
As you progress, you’ll focus on electrical or electronic engineering. You’ll get specialist training in applications ranging from sensor design to hardware accelerators, and from semiconductor devices to electric motors for future green transport. There is also an opportunity to apply to take a year in industry. In your final year, you’ll work on a project inspired by industrial needs.
You’ll have dedicated academic advisers to support you during your time at Sussex, as well as a team of student mentors.
When you graduate you’ll be ready to help fill the increasing global demand for engineers with expertise in both hardware and software, and ready to develop smart, sustainable and interconnected systems.

Entry Requirements
A level
A-levels must include Mathematics, with at least grade B. You should have a broad range of GCSEs grade 9-4 (A*-C), including good grades in relevant subjects.
Scottish Higher
Highers must include Mathematics, grade A. You should normally have an Advanced Higher in Mathematics (grade B).
Access to HE Diploma
Pass Diploma with at least 39 level 3 credits at Merit or above including 24 credits at Distinction. You will normally need A-level Mathematics, grade B, in addition to the Access to HE Diploma. All Access applicants will be assessed on a case by case basis.
Extended Project
We take the EPQ into account when considering your application and it can be useful in the summer when your results are released if you have narrowly missed the conditions of your offer. We do not routinely include the EPQ in the conditions of your offer but we sometimes offer alternative conditions that include the EPQ. International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
This score should be from the full IB Diploma. Higher Levels must include Mathematics, with a grade of 5. For entry, either Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches or Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level will be accepted.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)
The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma should be in Engineering and must include a Distinction in Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems or if taking the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering you must gain a Distinction in the Further Mathematics for Engineering Technicians. GCSE (or equivalent) Mathematics with at least grade 5 is essential (or grade B). You should also have a broad range of GCSEs 9-4 (A*-C), including good grades in relevant subjects.
