### Why choose this course at Sussex?
* Graduate ready to hit the ground running in careers in museums, galleries, heritage, arts journalism, curation and cultural management.
* Develop the interpretive skills and visual literacy to understand images and texts across time and culture.
* Gain the confidence to communicate visual and literary ideas with clarity and authority.
Literature and visual culture shape the world.
With our world-leading experts, you’ll explore words and ideas, challenge ideas and shape culture. If you’re an independent thinker ready to engage critically with culture in all its forms, this course is for you.
In English, you’ll:
* examine literature from across periods, genres and cultures
* question norms and address global challenges such as climate change, AI and social inequality
* develop your own critical and creative voice while honing practical skills for communicating with diverse audiences, supported by opportunities for placements, cultural partnerships and study abroad.
In Art History, you’ll:
* explore art in its broadest sense, from ancient mosaics to global environmental art, and from Pre-Raphaelite jewellery to music videos
* gain the tools to analyse images and objects critically, and develop visual literacy and cultural awareness in an age of image saturation
* engage with themes such as materiality, decolonisation, feminist and queer art histories, and institutional critique
* get hands-on experience through exhibition curation, live briefs with cultural partners and a study trip to Rome.
When you graduate, you’ll have an adaptable, sought-after skillset – the ability to analyse complex material, think critically and creatively, and communicate with impact across media and audiences. Your practical experience means you’ll have the confidence to contribute to professional environments from day one.
