### Why choose this course at Sussex?
* Graduate ready to hit the ground running in careers in film exhibition, festivals, journalism, production, distribution and cultural programming.
* Develop the critical and research skills to explore storytelling across film, television and literature.
* Build the confidence to write critically and creatively about film and visual media.
Stories – on the page and on screen – shape culture, society and identity. With us, you’ll explore how stories do this.
This radical, creative and practical degree is for you if you want to challenge ideas, rethink norms and make your voice heard in a rapidly changing world. Based in the dynamic city of Brighton, you’ll join a diverse and intellectually curious community where debate, originality and independence thrive. Supported by our experts, you’ll develop as a confident, critical and expressive thinker.
In English, you’ll:
* examine literature from across cultures, time periods and genres
* question what literature means today
* connect your writing to global issues such as AI, climate change and social justice.
In Film Studies, you’ll;
* explore cinema’s cultural impact, from classic genres to contemporary audiovisual media
* consider how film intersects with politics, art and technological change.
You’ll gain experience in both disciplines – from engaging with local cinemas and Brighton’s international film festival, to working with cultural organisations, taking interdisciplinary modules. Masterclasses, optional placements and research-led teaching will help you build skills in writing, presenting, critical analysis, creative expression and collaborative working.
The course empowers you to understand the world. And it gives you the creative and critical tools to change it. By the time you graduate, you’ll be a flexible, insightful communicator ready to thrive in a wide range of careers in areas including the media, publishing, education, law, government and the cultural industries.
