How can design help create a more sustainable future? How can better products improve people’s lives while reducing their impact on the planet?
Every product begins with a design decision. In fact, much of a product’s environmental impact is determined before it is ever made. That’s why today’s designers have an important role to play in shaping a better future. At Sussex, you’ll learn how to create products that are innovative, responsible and designed for a changing world.
You’ll develop a broad range of creative, technical and professional skills, including:
* sketching and visual communication
* CAD and digital design
* materials and manufacturing
* prototyping and testing
* business and design strategy.
Through individual and group projects, you’ll tackle real design challenges and build confidence as a designer. You’ll work on live industry briefs and learn how to take an idea from initial concept through to testing, costing and production.
At Sussex, Product Design is built around circular economy principles and responsible design. You’ll join a supportive creative community and learn a combination of practical and theoretical skills that reflect the needs of modern design practice. We also align the course to the Design Council’s 2025 ‘Skills for Planet Blueprint’, which outlines the essential skills necessary for professional, forward thinking designers. You’ll develop the knowledge needed to design for a more regenerative future.
By the time you graduate, you’ll have the skills, experience and confidence to create products that make a positive difference to people, organisations and the world around you.

A-levels should include Art or a Design subject normally at grade B. Without A-levels in these areas you will still be considered but will need to demonstrate a strong, recent background in art and design through other means. You must have GCSE (or equivalent) Mathematics with at least grade 4 (or grade C) and, if you are not offering Art or a Design subject at A-level you must also have GCSE Art or Design Technology at grade 6 (or grade B). You should also have a broad range of GCSEs 9-4 (A*-C), including good grades in relevant subjects.

Access to HE Diploma
Pass Diploma with at least 39 level 3 credits at Merit or above including 21-24 credits at Distinction. Applicants without an Access containing Art or Design will still be considered but will need to demonstrate a strong, recent background in art and design through other means. Extended Project
We take the EPQ into account when considering your application and it can be useful in the summer when your results are released if you have narrowly missed the conditions of your offer. We do not routinely include the EPQ in the conditions of your offer but we sometimes offer alternative conditions that include the EPQ. Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)
The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma would normally be in Art and Design.
