The BSc (Hons) Immersive Technology & Simulation Design is a future-focused degree for the next generation of creative technologists, simulation designers and immersive experience developers. Combining digital design, programming and emerging technologies, the course prepares you to create innovative solutions for industries increasingly shaped by simulation, virtual environments and real-time technologies.
You’ll learn how to design, build and evaluate immersive experiences and simulation environments used across sectors such as marine autonomy, defence, healthcare, robotics and professional training. From virtual and augmented reality (XR) experiences to interactive simulations and digital twins, the course blends creative practice with technical development, enabling you to create engaging solutions to real-world challenges.
A distinctive feature of the programme is its combination of creative design, systems thinking and applied technology. You will develop skills in areas including immersive environment design, programming, interaction design, networked systems, physical computing, photogrammetry and human-centred design. Alongside technical expertise, you will explore the ethical, social and accessibility considerations of emerging technologies, learning how to design experiences that are innovative, inclusive and impactful.
Learning is hands-on, practical and industry-informed. Through studio projects, technical workshops, live briefs and collaborative development opportunities, you will work with industry-standard tools and workflows while responding to authentic challenges drawn from professional and research contexts. Supported by specialist facilities, including immersive visualisation environments, advanced media laboratories and motion capture resources, you will develop the confidence to experiment, prototype and test new ideas.
As you progress through the course, you will develop increasingly advanced skills in programming, hardware integration, simulation systems, testing and deployment. You will work both independently and collaboratively, building a professional portfolio that demonstrates your technical ability, creativity and problem-solving skills. An optional placement year provides the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience and further enhance your employability.
In your final year, you will undertake a major independent project and specialist simulation and training design work, allowing you to focus on an area that aligns with your career ambitions. Whether you are developing an immersive training solution, creating a digital twin, designing interactive systems or exploring innovative applications of XR technology, you will graduate with a substantial body of work that showcases your expertise.
