The combination of English and History is a natural one. To understand how English literature and language have changed, developed and influenced cultures, you need to explore the historical context in which they were created. Literary texts can also provide important insights that help us create a clearer picture of life in earlier periods of history.
Splitting your time between English and History, you’ll have the opportunity to pursue either an English literature or an English language pathway. You’ll study a range of genres from literary fiction, journalism, theatre, film, everyday conversation, adverts, digital writing, to poetry and creative writing.
History is an imaginative process; you’ll learn to appreciate things from different points of view, developing an acute awareness of how the past underpins institutions, identities and traditions. You’ll explore topics ranging from the ancient world to the present and encompassing Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas, and analyse the processes and ideas that have shaped our world.
